In 1864, victory in the War for Southern Independence seemed a dim and distant goal, yet there was a glimmer of hope. Young men and old still joined under the Battle Flag to defend their state, their homes and families. In the west, Nathan Bedford Forrest was leading Sherman a merry chase and in Virginia, Robert E. Lee was still inflicting heavy blows on the Union Army of the Potomac. At sea, Confederate raiders sank ship after ship. In the heart of Dixie, Southern women held the farms and towns together. O.K. Jones, just 19 years old, enlisted to defend his home. He wrote in his journal about his first combat-"Had a little fight." The "little fight" was the Battle of the Wilderness. His other "little fights" were Spotsylvania, Yellow Tavern and General Jubal Early's 1864 campaign in the Shenandoah Valley. O.K. Jones' wartime experience wasn't heroic exploits but the dedicated service of a good soldier. He didn't fight for high political ideals but, like all combat soldiers, fought for his comrades, his family and for his own sense of honor.

This is not a novel in the classic sense of the word: it contains no tales of derring-do, nor breathtaking love stories. Rather, it is the real story of a young private in the 15th Virginia Infantry who enlisted late in the war and survived a number of skirmishes and battles, among them The Wilderness and Yellow Tavern. It is based on the diary of the soldier in question, Osgood Knox Jones, an ancestor of the author's wife. The author's accomplishment has been to flesh out the rather sketchy diary with the circumstances, conversations, thoughts, emotions and attitudes consistent with the events recorded in the diary, as well as with the broader background of the War Between The States. The result is a fascinating glimpse into the everyday life of a young Virginia cavalryman during the conflict - what it was like to actually be there and live the war, told in straightforward prose in the Southern vernacular yet with such evocative detail that the reader can hear the Southern accent, smell the smoky fires, taste the hardtack and bacon, feel the numbing cold, and hear the trampling of hooves and of gunfire. I read it in one go, only stopping for meals, it is that fascinating. Warmly recommended for those really into Southern Confederate history, for a tantalizing glimpse into everyday soldier life.Product details
